If you’re searching for a peaceful and visually stunning location for engagement photos in the Hudson Valley, Innisfree Garden is truly one of the region’s hidden gems.
Located in Millbrook, New York, Innisfree Gardens is a 185-acre public garden inspired by traditional Chinese landscape design. The property centers around a tranquil lake and features winding paths, sculptural stone structures, open meadows, and thoughtfully designed viewpoints that make every corner feel like a work of art. The best time to stroll the garden is Late April – mid November. Open Wednesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm.
For engagement sessions, the gardens offer an incredible variety of scenery in a single location. From quiet woodland paths to dramatic stone terraces overlooking the water.
Couples planning a session here should know that there is a small admission fee to enter the gardens, but there is currently no separate photography permit fee, making it one of the most accessible and beautiful engagement session locations in the Hudson Valley.
We arrived early in the morning, early October, just as the gardens opened, one of my favorite times to photograph at Innisfree. The early light is soft and golden, the air is still, and the pathways are quiet before visitors begin to arrive.
We spent the morning slowly exploring the property together, wandering through the winding paths and discovering the garden’s unique stone structures and terraces. The peaceful lake reflected the soft morning light while native plants and trees framed the landscape around us.
One of the most beautiful parts of photographing engagement sessions at Innisfree Gardens is how naturally the environment encourages couples to slow down and simply enjoy being together. Rather than rushing from one photo spot to another, the gardens invite you to walk, explore, and take in the scenery creating moments that feel genuine and relaxed.
